Walkabout

Macro, Macro Man

Macro photography is something I find fascinating so I couldn't wait to start using my new Sigma 105mm f2.8 lens. Typically though my tripod broke the day it arrived so I've had to go hand to hand with the incredibly small plane of focus available.

1. 105mm 1/200s f4 -1 1/3ev ISO100

2. 105mm 1/100s f2.8 -1ev ISO100 - Curves adjustment, cloning

Movement & Rhythm

With most of my time spent trying to keep a steady hand it's easy to forget what movement can bring to an image. 'Freezing' a moment or allowing motion to be captured or created by the camera can add an abstract dynamic to an otherwise mundane photograph.

Below are 3 in-camera shots taken using movement to create a sense of motion, rhythm balanced between shutter speed, panning, tilting, zooming or rotating the camera.

33mm 1/10 f11 ISO400, flash set to rear curtain sync -1 expo.comp (zoomed in during exposure)

17mm 1/10 f14 ISO100 (360 rotation during exposure)

45mm 1/8 f22 ISO100 (downward tilt during exposure)

Garden of Evil: Forbidden Fruit

Part of a series of planned gothic fairytale images. A friend beat me to it last year by staging a similar photograph using barbed wire, so it's not the most original idea but one I wanted to post as it's been on the cards for months!

Taken indoors, handheld and lit from a single window to the upper left of shot with a silver reflector to the right, the low light meant using a higher ISO which has contributed some gritty noise. I applied a heavy curves adjustment in Photoshop and converted to mono using an adjustment layer, with the colour of the apple brought back using a layer mask.

Time for Change

18 months after posting my first photograph on 'Being Steve Andrews' I've decided it's time to push myself further or risk becoming comfortable with my amateur status!

Bridging the gap with the Canon 50D I now eagerly await the arrival of the Canon 7D with Sigma 105mm f2.8 macro lens. To celebrate this new technology and to warrant the costs involved in it's purchase I've started this new blog, with the aim to up my game both technically and creatively.

My old blog will continue to function as a general site for my walkabout shots with this one being specific to the 7D and my experiences with using it.
